A short note scribbled inside the front cover reads 'My nemesis is almost upon me. It is nearly midnight and suddenly the whispers and muted footsteps I have been able to hear for the last hour have suddenly stopped.'

'I sense an evil presence approaching, the temperature has suddenly dropped, condensation covers the walls of this cursed room and above all a charnal smell pervades. Whatever monster rules these doomed people draws nigh and it is unlikely I shall survive the meeting.

'I have left a set of scribbled notes barely hidden in the hope that it will find those and look no further. This journal I will hide more securely behind the clothes press in the hope that those who come after me will be forewarned of what lies in wait.

'May God have mercy on my soul...'
