EmEditor Version 3.26
It's fast and lean - it fires up like lightning when I click on its icon. In fact it's so fast that I don't bother keeping a copy minimised like I've had to with other aspirants to the position of text editor. It fires up from scratch as fast as un-minimising! It has templates to handle not only ordinary text, but also programming languages like C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, assembler and Perl, and such things as SQL, HTML and XML. That's all available in the basic editor, and the programming modes all come with user-configurable syntax highlighting. If you want extras then there is a wide selection available as plug-ins, including such things as spell checkers. I've only just started using the spell checker, so I can't really comment on it yet, but it definitely seems usable. A free version of the program, which starts to nag you after a while, but which is fully featured is available from http://www.emurasoft.com. It costs $30 USD to register it, at which time it stops nagging you! I thought it was one of the best $30 I've spent for a long time, and I use it all the time - in fact I write Winding Down on it. Note, though that it isn't a word processor, it's a text editor. It won't produce text with fancy fonts and formatting. Highly recommended.
Afterword: 12 November 2002 The version is now at 3.28, and continues to be as good and as lean as ever. I've been using this steadily ever since I did the original review in April, and I still have nothing but good to say about this editor. |
