WEB FED AWARD WINNING PLANET:
MYTH - OVERLORD SARLOCK

Reviewed on March 17, 2002

Immediately upon entering what I thought was the interstellar link of Myth all of my ship’s sensors died. I ripped open the control panel cover, shocking myself on the electronics within, and desperately tried to find what had gone wrong with my instruments. There was no sign of an orbit, no systems visible through my viewscreen, and no sounds to be heard other than my cursing. Not only was I looking at certain failure in my duties as canine apprentice planet muncher, it looked like I wasn’t going to make that date with Fifi anytime in the near future as well.

I banged my paws on the console and the screens flickered to life for a moment. The viewscreen showed my ship was encased in some nebulous cloud of dark matter and my comm unit crackled with a broken message, of which I could only make out a warning that Sarlock had destroyed Myth!

If I had a lick of sense I would have tucked tail and headed back to Sol right then.

I hated to ruin my senseless reputation though, so I blindly navigated my ship to what was left of the planet. Peering out the airlock I could see nothing but rubble and craters and enough smoke to gag even a three pack a day Yak smoker. There wasn’t much substantial out there; solid structures seemed to shimmer in the distance then vanish like Diesel’s ladies with your wallet. Sarlock had done quite a job at munching up his own planet and leaving it with little to interest a holiday traveler.

I wandered about a bit doing my duty, occasionally running across a stranger that wouldn’t meet my glance or toss me a cookie. My paws grew tired and ragged from the uneven scarred ground and I sought the local healer for a bit of salve for my pads. She was the first on Myth to treat me kindly, and the first to warn me of the dangers I would face on this planet!

Myth is full of danger, intrigue, and host to a puzzle with a one-gig prize to the visitor who saves the planet from the evil Sarlock. It’s also one of the best-written planets in DataSpace, drawing the explorer into its history and theme before he even steps out of his ship. Most of the planet is within the puzzle, however, and it is a challenging one – make sure you’re insured and look carefully for hints!

Congratulations on a job very well done, Sarlock! Even though you’ve reduced your planet to a smoking pile of rubble, you’ve earned yourself a Walrus of Merit for your efforts!

(Hazed – I didn’t dig a single one of those holes on his planet.)
