CRYPTOGRAMS Saturday February 18 by Catspaws By the time this week's players arrived at the Duff Modem on Mars, someone had mysteriously fished all the beef from the pub's famous cottage pies. The cook was running around the pub in a worried frenzy, and a certain kitty was hiding under a table. The furore eventually died down, the kitty crept from her hiding place, and the game began. This week's warm-up puzzle was the popular player names puzzle, with the obvious starting point that each name began with the letter 'C'. Fancy quickly finished it, with Monkey right on his tail, and Prometheus snapping up third place.
Our second puzzle was a bit harder. For a starting point, I would recommend looking for a command that begins with a three-letter word. Monkey stole the lead from Fancy on this one, and Gilar finished third.
Mars is an exciting planet to explore, with many objects and mobiles of interest. My only real complaint is they don't let the cats climb the trees here. For starting points, look to the one-letter word, as well as the ever-popular common three-letter word. Fancy took the lead back from Monkey on this puzzle, and Gilar finished third.
Cryptograms tries to be educational as well as fun, so for our next puzzle, we prowled the pages of the Encyclopedia Galactica. (Do you know there is nothing in the Encyclopedia about space felines????) Fancy finished first again, Gilar finished second, and Prometheus kept his ever-comfortable third position. For a starting point, I look to the apostrophe in the first entry, as well as to that common three-letter word that pops up again in several entries.
For our final puzzle, I thought back to those days when I was a proud commander doing runs from Pearl to Doris simply because no one else would. This puzzle has the one-word starting point, but other than that, it's not as easy a puzzle as it appears. Monkey finished this one first, Fancy finished second, and Zand stole Prometheus' third place spot.
When the scores were tallied, Fancy barely beat out Monkey by a single point, and Gilar and Prometheus tied for third place. We play Cryptograms every Saturday at 4.00pm eastern.
