DILCONIA'S DISAPPEARING DEPOTS

by Hazed

We had an Unfortunate Incident last Monday which meant the game was unavailable for a while. What started as a game crash turned into something much more serious.

Game crashes are an annoyance but usually when they happen, the game fires up again almost immediately, so you can log right back on. On this occasion, though, the game failed to fire up after the crash. Of course, it happened in the middle of the night so Bella wasn't around to fix the problem until the next morning.

The cause of the outage turned out to be a corrupted file. When the game crashed, it had been in the process of writing something to the Dilconia infrastructure file - that's the file holding details of factories and depots on the planet. Being halfway through this operation at the time of the crash messed the file up and left it in an unreadable state. When the game started to fire up, it got as far as loading in the files for the planet Dilconia, then choked on the corrupted infrastructure file and gave up the ghost.

The next day, Bella fixed the problem simply by deleting the mucked up portion of the file. The game was then able to complete the process of loading in all the planet data, and it fired up again.

However, this did mean that property built on Dilconia vanished. Thankfully, infrastructure builds were not affected but some factories and depots on the planet vanished and the CEOs in question had to purchase them again. They were given compensation, however, so they didn't lose out in the end.
