ON THE WEB: MARS ROVER SPOTTED FROM ORBIT

by Hazed

Ho hum, another picture of the surface of Mars. But this one's a bit different...

For a start, it's taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) which arrived earlier this year, so the detail is incredible. So incredible, in fact, that you can see the Opportunity rover and some of its tracks.

At the resolution of the camera, objects of about 1 metre can be recognized, and the two rovers are a bit bigger than that. The image is of the Victoria Crater, and scientists hope to use the picture to see if there's a way for the rover to enter it.

Take a look on the Astronomy Picture of the Day web site.
