REAL LIFE NEWS: HOW VULCAN, ALBERTA MADE AN ATTRACTION OF ITS NAME

by Hazed

Have you heard of the town of Vulcan, Alberta, in Canada? Probably not - unless you are a Star Trek fan. For the town has deliberately played on its name to become a popular destination for Trekkies.

Formerly the home of grain elevators for storing farmers' grain, this small town only has a population of 1,700. Looking for a way to boost tourism, in 1995 the residents of Vulcan decided to capitalize on their town's link to the Star Trek franchise. In the Star Trek movies and shows, Vulcan is used as the name of both a planet and the race of people who developed there. The best-known member of this race in the shows and movies is Mr. Spock, portrayed by Leonard Nimoy.

They have built several attractions including a replica of the Starship Enterprise, and host a number of Star Trek events. These have made the town a must-see destination for Star Trek fans.
