CRYPTOGRAMS

Saturday November 18
by Catspaws

Fed has always had a tradition of sponsoring gaming events on a regular basis for the entertainment of staff and participants alike. Of late, attendance at the gaming events has dropped, which makes a certain kitty very very sad. Some think the games are for the super-intelligent, but they're not. Even I was able to play the games, and... wait, let's try a different direction here! Fed gaming events are for everyone, from the smallest commander to the richest engineer. From Fedpardy to Word Scramble, from Feddergories to Fed Phrase Game, from Wacky Words to Cryptograms, there is a game for everyone. And, there is often the bonus of a slithy to be won, as well as kudos on the boards and in the Star. So, why not give gaming events a try, and see just how much fun they can really be?

I was in a feisty mood this week, so all the puzzles involved words of five letters. I got sadistic glee out of hearing the complaints after the third or fourth puzzle, which made it all worthwhile. The first puzzle dealt with staff members whose names have five letters. Gradon, Gilar and Ariadne solved this relatively easy puzzle.

The second puzzle was a bit harder, dealing with commodities with five-letter names. Again, the players solved this puzzle in the same order. So it was time to move to something harder...

Commands with five letters proved to be a bit trickier, and earned the hostess a few hisses, especially since there are a couple of commands with almost identical letters, and only one of them was on the list. Gilar had an emergency and had to leave, so Ariadne solved this puzzle before Gradon.

Planets with five-letter names had the players groaning. These are not easy to pick out of a DI SYSTEMS list, as there are quite a few planets around these days. Gradon eventually beat Ariadne in solving this puzzle.

I so enjoyed their moans and complaints that the final puzzle dealt with five-letter system names. Eventually, Ariadne beat Gradon in solving it, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.

When the scores were tallied, Gradon came in first, Ariadne came in second, and Gilar came in third. We play Cryptograms each Saturday at 4.00pm eastern, and it is a really fun game, especially when there are a lot of players. Why don't YOU join us next week?
