FEDPARDY!

Tuesday January 30
by Fancy-Fancy

Three players joined me for tonight's edition of Fedpardy. Captainfuzzy, Otter, and Ariadne came to Studio 1 to play, and Catspaws joined us there to watch. I went over the rules for our new players and made sure everyone understood how to play. Satisfied that was the case, I revealed tonight's categories, which were: Out with the "Old", In with the New, G Whiz, and Announcements. The players spun the wheel in the studio for the honor of the first selection, and that went to Captainfuzzy, who selected G Whiz for 1 to start the game, and we were off.

Otter rang in and responded correctly to that answer to get on the board first. The players sampled every category early, and Ariadne picked up the next point from In with the New, and then found the first Daily Double with the next selection, In with the New for 5. She decided to make it worth 1 point, and this was the answer:

Whereas keeping out undesirables was treated as a game management issue in the old Fed, it is now handled and enforced by the game code with this command.

She thought a while, then responded, "What is exile?", which was correct for her 1 point wager. Ariadne selected Out with the "Old" for 5 next, and Fuzzy tried it, but missed, and no one else tried it. Both Fuzzy and Otter tried the 4 point answer in the same category, but both missed. Otter remembered the category on the 3 point answer and got it right, then did the same with the 2 pointer to finish the category. To finish the Fedpardy round, Otter started Announcements for 1, which Fuzzy missed, but Ariadne got, and then Fuzzy finally collected points from New for 2. At the half, Ariadne led with 3, to 2 for Otter, and -8 for Captainfuzzy.

As the one trailing at the half, Fuzzy got to select first in Double Fedpardy, and picked G Whiz for 10. Otter rang in to get that one, and then the 8 right after. Ariadne picked up the 6 in the G category, then went to Announcements for 10. Fuzzy rang in to try that one, and got it right to go on the plus side. No one tried the 8 in Announcements, but Ariadne rang in to respond to and get the 8 in New. Otter collected the 6 to finish the New category. Otter decided to finish the G category for 4, and got it after Fuzzy missed it to fall back into the hole. With the choice of Announcements for 4 or 6, Otter picked the 6 and found the other Daily Double. Leading 30-17 over Ariadne, he decided to risk 4 points, and this was the answer:

The tannoy goes bing-bong and a crazed voice says it wants these, before it gets abruptly cut off.

Otter shrugged and tried, "bella's lips", but the crazed voice heard in Art's Bistro on Rhea says it wants brains. That left the last answer on the board, and Ariadne rang in and got it for 4 points. Our scores after Double Fedpardy were:

Otter: 26
Ariadne: 21
Captainfuzzy: -2

Otter and Ariadne advanced to Final Fedpardy. Captainfuzzy got my thanks for playing tonight. Otter and Ariadne got the category of Sol Objects to help them decide how many points they wanted to risk. They decided their wagers, and when those were in, and both players verified they were ready, I revealed tonight's Final Fedpardy answer:

This item, visible in a park, serves as a potent symbol of humankind's ability to exist on the most inhospitable of worlds.

Ariadne came up with "What is a tree?", thinking of Mars, but that wasn't what we were after here. She wagered 11 points, leaving her with 10.

Otter also responded with "What is a tree?" But the clue was referring to the fountain in the park on Titan. Otter wagered 4 points, leaving him with 22, and that made Otter this week's Fedpardy champion!

Congratulations to Otter on winning this week's Fedpardy, and to Ariadne, our runner-up. Join me again in Studio 1 at 10.00pm eastern on February 13 for our next exciting edition of FEDPARDY! Also join us for the Fed Phrase Game on February 6 as we spin the wheel and solve word puzzles.
