REAL LIFE NEWS: DEEP PURPLE PLAY GIG ON TITAN

by Hazed

No, they don't really, but acoustic scientists have been pondering how sounds would... well... sound on the different planets and have come to the conclusion that Titan is the best place for a rock gig.

Physicist Andi Petculescu at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and mechanical engineer Richard Lueptow of Northwestern University in Evanston have developed a model that predicts the acoustic properties of gas mixtures, which depend on the composition of the gas as well as its pressure, density and temperature.

These conditions vary wildly from planet to planet. As a demonstration of just what a difference this makes to sound waves, they played the famous opening riff from Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water through a filter with the appropriate frequency responses - and the sound was by far the best under the conditions found on Titan.

You can read all the details on the New Scientist space blog - their story contains a link to the sound files so you can hear the actual results.
