SPAM ON THE NEWS MAILING LIST

The Fed Chronicle mailing list is set up so that anybody can subscribe to it, but only a couple of people can post messages to it - specifically, me and Freya. However, earlier this week, a spammer managed to send three spam messages to the list, and when they received those messages, several players sent their own test messages to the list to see what happened.

As soon as I found out about this, I looked at the settings for the list but couldn't see anything wrong with them. Maybe it was always possible for anybody to send a message to the list, but nobody had tried until now. But given the way spammers operate, and have been operating for years, that doesn't seem all that likely.

But to make sure they can't do it again, I have disabled the list completely, so that nobody can send anything out on it. Obviously, I un-disabled the list in order to send out the Fed2 Star today, but now it has been sent I have turned the list off again.

Meanwhile, the techbods are taking a look at the situation to see if they can figure out why the restrictions on the list suddenly broke.

Many apologies to all of you subscribers who received the spam messages. I loathe and detest spam so I feel particularly indignant that this happened, and I will do my utmost to make sure it does not happen again.
