FED PHRASE GAME ROADSHOW

Wednesday 18 July
by Gwaptiva

The settlement on Sumatra might very well have been called Marmite: you either love it or you hate it. I'm one that thinks it is one of the most wonderful places in Sol and its place in my heart is almost as big and dear as that I have for Scotia. This may well be one of the reasons that the Phrase Game Roadshow pitches its tent so frequently on this moon; as it did this week. Joining me in Custer's Last Stand were Trilleth, Garioso, Doolittle and Cloudbase, all ready to strive for the glory of victory (or to avoid the ignominy of defeat).

After spinning to determine the order of play, Garioso started the search for a Famous Person of four words. As usual, the Phrase Game's definition of "famous" (and of "person") is a little loose, but Gari got a good start with this one. He found a whole bunch of letters to score 2250 points before spinning Lose a Turn. Trilleth then asked for the G and due to a massive goof by the host she was told it wasn't there and Doolittle started his turn and found a letter. When the error was discovered, and the host's blushing had faded a little, Trilleth continued her turn, aided by the letter Doolittle had found. [See, no cover-up.] She added a bunch more letters, completely revealing the second and third words, but Lose a Turn put a stop to her efforts of solving the phrase. Doolittle solved the phrase correctly as "Trotsky the cleaning droid" (after rejecting Trutsky the cleaning druid as being silly).

With 800 points for Doolittle, and Cloudbase disappeared due to family commitments, Trilleth got to start the second puzzle, in another one of those categories that allows for a lot of interpretation: Institutions. Trilleth only found the one letter, then Doolittle added a bunch until he tried to buy the E which did not occur in the phrase. Garioso found the L then suddenly fell silent. Turns out his neighbors arrived to feed the poor guy; he must be playing Fed so much that he's wasting away. When he did finally return, he didn't make much more of the phrase, and let Trilleth in to solve the phrase as Solar Wind Dynamics Group.

The third (and final) phrase would turn out to be a tricky one, once again in the category Institutions. Doolittle started off well, but then decided it would be nice to spin up a Bankrupt. Garioso, a bit behind in the standings, needed a high-scoring round with a solution to take the win, with Trilleth and Doolittle only needing a solution. Gari didn't get far on his turn, as opposed to Trilleth, who managed to combine a failing battery, naughty children and the banter of the other contestants to build up a nice score and reveal most of the phrase. But, as stated before, scores don't matter much if you don't solve the phrase, and the last word in the phrase, admittedly a very nasty one, was proving a major hurdle. They must have gone through almost the entire alphabet until finally, after Trilleth's sons had got grounded and Garioso had eaten all the food, Doolittle grabbed victory by finding the solution: Dr. Theopolis is Heavy GmbH.

So, spoils, glory and slithy tove all to Doolittle, but in the end all had fun and that was what counted. Join us again next Wednesday for more fun, chat and a side-order of Phrase Game.
