REAL LIFE NEWS: GUNS AND RACOONS BRING DOWN NETWORKS

by Hazed

Did your ISP, cable provider or power company suddenly let you down over the New Year? If so, it may have been for a rather bizarre reason. Two of the most unusual explanations given were guns and racoons.

Cable and broadcast television services in southeast Memphis were knocked out for several hours because of bullet holes that had ripped into fibre-optic lines. Someone must have been celebrating the New Year with a bang!

And in Virginia, a racoon looking for somewhere to snuggle up for the night electrocuted himself after running into a transformer at a Warwick substation, leaving over 8,000 residents without power for an hour.

Internet monitoring firm Pingdom have compiled a catalogue of all the power and connection excuses reported on the US news over the past week, and you can read the results here.
