FED PHRASE GAME

Tuesday February 5
by Fancy-Fancy, Mogul of Toontown

It was "Super Tuesday" in the U.S. with the presidential primaries, following Super Bowl Sunday, and it turned out we had a super-suspenseful Fed Phrase Game in Studio 1 tonight. Angelfowl, Bubba, and Otter joined me in the studio, all ready and eager to play. I went over how to play for Bubba and answered his questions on game play. When that was all done, the players spun the wheel to determine their playing order, and Angelfowl would up first in the order, followed by Otter, then Bubba.

Our first puzzle was 3 word people (3, 10, and 4 letters), with Angelfowl starting it. She had grumbled about getting first in the order, commenting about how she didn't do well starting puzzles. But she did well starting this one, with 3 T's for 700 each and 2 H's for 600 each, followed by buying the E's, calling the R, M, N, A, and L before solving - The Weathermen Cult - for 4450 points.

Seeing how well Angelfowl had done in Round 1 after saying she didn't do well starting off puzzles, Otter did the same, to everyone else's laughter, including mine, before starting our second puzzle of the night, a 4 word event (11, 9, 3, and 6 letters). Otter also started off with 3 T's, an H, 3 N's, the E's, 4 R's, and buying the A's, netting 2250 points, before landing on a Lose a Turn. Bubba took over, and found a B, 2 G's, 2 C's, an L, and an M for 3050 points before landing on Bankrupt. Angelfowl got the puzzle and called an S, but that wasn't in the puzzle. Otter got the puzzle back, with his 2250 points intact, and rather than risk spinning, solved the puzzle - celebrating cornering the market - to secure those 2250 points.

Bubba was up first to start our next puzzle, a 4 word person (8, 8, 6, and 6 letters). He found a couple T's for 200 each, then two N's for 1000 each. He bought the E's, and found two S's before spinning 1000 again and calling an L. Unfortunately for him, there weren't any L's, and Angelfowl took over. She started off finding an M, then 3 R's, 2 C's, bought the A's and U's, and then called an F that was missing from the puzzle. Otter took over and filled in the D, G's, I's, O's, J, and H to fill in the entire puzzle, then read it aloud to solve - Managing Director, Joshua Custer - for 2350 points, and a slight lead in the game score.

Our fourth puzzle of the night was a 5 word thing (3, 6, 3, 3, and 7 letters), and we were back to Bubba to start it. He started with three T's, bought the E's, and found the H's before hitting a Bankrupt. Angelfowl got the puzzle and filled in N, L, A, S, C, I, and D. With 1950 points, she called M next, but it wasn't in the puzzle. With the lead in hand, and the puzzle reading:

the latest _ ad: c_d-che_in _

Otter decided to solve it without spinning - the latest fad: cud-chewing - and collected 250 points more.

The game had run roughly the allotted hour, but I offered the final puzzle I had prepared for the night if all agreed, and they did, even Otter who thought he was securing the final puzzle last round. Our fifth and final puzzle was a 3 word thing (9, 9, and 7 letters), and we were back to Bubba to start it off. Bubba started off with the T's, N, and E's, then tried S, but there weren't any, and turned it over to Angelfowl. She found the H's, an R, bought the A's, found an M, 3 C's, and bought the O's, and placed two L's, making the puzzle read:

chocolate cham_a_ne tr___le

She tried to solve with "Chocolate champaine truffle", but that was not correct. Otter then did solve it - chocolate champagne truffle - for another 250 points to finish the game.

Our final scores tonight had Angelfowl scoring 4450 in the first puzzle, and Otter solving the rest of them for 5100 points total, making him the big winner in tonight's game. Congratulations to Otter and Angelfowl, and thanks to Bubba for also playing in tonight's game. Think you could solve puzzles like these? Why don't you join us for our next exciting edition of the Fed Phrase Game? We'll hold it in Studio 1 on the Lattice on February 19, beginning at 10 p.m. Eastern. Hope to see you there.
