REAL LIFE NEWS: FORECASTING EARTHQUAKES COULD SAVE LIVES

by Hazed

Earthquakes can be terribly destructive, as we can see from the terrible devastation wreaked by the one in China recently. Scientists have been searching for years to find a way to predict when they will strike, and now they may be close to succeeding.

Researchers from NASA say they have found a close link between electrical disturbances on the edge of our atmosphere and impending earthquakes on the ground below them, so they have teamed up with experts in the UK to investigate this possibility. If it does pan out, it could mean advance warning for quakes would allow people to evacuate safely before they hit.

But it's a bit "if", and many scientists are sceptical about the link between space signals and ground earthquakes. Still, it's worth investigating! You can read more details in this BBC News report.
