ON THE WEB: INSIDE NORAD

by Hazed

A legacy of the cold war is NORAD - the North American Aerospace Defense Command, situated deep under Colarado's Cheyenne Mountain. In real life it was intended to be the control center from which the defence of the US and Canada could be controlled in the event of an attack from the Communist bloc; and in fiction, it was often the nerve center of the opposition to alien attack.

So what's it really like down there? Well, since its importance has reduced as the cold war came to an end, it's no longer as secret as it used to be, and visitors can take a look around (and buy souvenir t-shirts). Here's a fascinating account of how a group of science fiction writers got a tour of NORAD. Read it at http://io9.com/5034540/deep-inside-
