REAL LIFE NEWS: THE DANGERS OF KARAOKE

by Hazed

I've always hated karaoke - listening to drunks screeching out tuneless renditions of the pop classics is not my idea of a good time. Now I have another reason to avoid it like the Rigellian green plague: it's dangerous. So dangerous, it can lead to... death!

A Malaysian man has just been stabbed to death in a karaoke bar. Not because his singing was so bad that he offended all the listeners - I could understand that as a motive for murder. No, it was because he refused to stop singing and let someone else have a turn at the microphone.

Abdul Sani Doli hogged the stage at the bar in Sanadak town, on eastern Borneo island, for so long that other wannabe singers attacked him. The fight spilled out into the street and he was punched before being stabbed with a knife. His body was found a short distance from the bar.

The local police chief, ACP Rosli Mohd Isa, said that two men were being held in police custody, helping them with their inquiries.

So next time you're tempted to jump up on stage and regale everyone with a flat version of Gloria Gayner's "I Will Survive", don't - because you might not!

Footnote - Speaking of karaoke, as if hanging about in airports waiting for your flight isn't traumatic enough, Houstan's Bush International Airport is setting up karaoke booths for travelers. Shudder!
