FROM THE POSTBAG: HOW ARE JOBS GENERATED?

by Hazed

We were recently asked this question:

The Cartel workboard has me puzzled. Job 286 has a load of Hides going from Grandstand to Cube but Cube does not need Hides. Very strange.

Not as strange as all that, as soon as you realize that the jobs on the workboard are generated completely at random. They don't have anything to do with the exchanges at all - the surpluses and demands of planets don't get taken into account when Armstrong Cuthbert put the job on the board, and the goods being picked up and delivered don't have any effect on the exchanges.

That will change, eventually. Giving factories and planets the ability to put jobs on the board to pipeline goods between planets is on Bella's list of stuff to do, and those jobs will involve real goods that will have a real effect.

But for now, you can assume that in the example above, there was a private customer on Cube that needed a whole load of imported hides!
