VIDEO OF THE WEEK: CARL SAGAN - A GLORIOUS DAWNby HazedYou have probably heard of the auto-tuner. If you haven't, you have certainly heard its output! It's a gadget that is used in record studios to... how shall I say this politely... smooth out irregularities in people's singing voices, by making sure every note comes out on key. It's one of the reasons why so much modern pop music sounds bland and samey. You may have seen some of the videos on the internet where people have found novel uses for the auto-tuner, by feeding speech into it. "Auto-tuning the news" became a brief craze that I found amusing the first time I saw it but soon got old. Here, though, is a genuinely moving use of auto-tuning. It takes video of Carl Sagan talking about the wonders of the universe, auto-tunes his voice and sets it to music. The result is beautiful and uplifting. And there's a cameo appearance from Stephen Hawking, too. Watch the video here. |
