REAL LIFE NEWS: TAXI DRIVERS ANTICIPATE MEGA MOBILE HAUL

by Hazed

London's taxi drivers are gearing up for Christmas when trade always increases - all those drunken workers needing taxis home from office parties. This means there will be a huge increase in the number of items left in the back.

London residents leave an average of 10,000 mobile phones in the back of black cabs every month. On top of that, about 1,000 other gadgets, such as iPods, laptops and memory sticks, get abandoned on the back seat each month. In the run-up to Christmas, not only the drunken party-goers but also those struggling with bags full of shopping will leave their high-tech gizmos behind as they exit the taxis.

This figures come from a recent survey which is conducted regularly, sponsored by security firm Credant Technologies. They advise people to password protect, or better still encrypt, data on mobile devices just in case you do leave them in a taxi.

The survey quizzed 300 taxi drivers in London and a similar number if New York. Four out of five of the London cabbies said that owners of gear accidentally left behind were reunited with their kit once the driver found it in the back. By contrast, only two in three of the New Yorkers said they handed the lost mobiles and gadgets into the depot at the end of the working day. Tut tut. Oh well, it's one way to get Christmas presents to give to your family and friends...
