REAL LIFE NEWS: NEW YEARS EVE PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE

by Hazed

On New Years Eve, not only can you celebrate the passing of the old year and the start of the new one, but you can also watch a partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from all of Europe and Asia, the extreme eastern part of North America and the western half of Australia.

In a lunar eclipse, the Earth, Sun and Moon are almost exactly in line, with the Earth between the other two bodies. This means the Earth's shadow blocks the sun's light from reaching the moon; the light that does get there has a reddish hue so when the moon reflects the light back it seems to turn red.

In a partial lunar eclipse we see part of the moon darker and part of it with hints of color.

This eclipse will start at 17:15 UK time, 12:15 eastern time and finish at 21:30 UK time, 15:30 eastern.
