REAL LIFE NEWS: NET CROWDS EXAMINE MOON CRATERS

by Hazed

Occasionally a project comes along which makes excellent use of willing volunteers on the internet, and here's one.

The various spacecraft in orbit around the moon, such as NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, are taking detailed images of the surface, better than anything ever seen before. There's only one problem: the super-powerful camera which is photographing every bit of the moon's surface is taking so many images that scientists can't look at them all.

So astrophysicist Chris Lintott has come up with a solution. He is asking amateur astronomers to help review, measure and classify these tens of thousands of pictures. He's set up the website MoonZoo.org where anyone can log on, get some training, and become a space explorer.

What a great idea!
