REAL LIFE NEWS: ALIENS HURL METEORITES AT BOSNIAN MAN

by Hazed

A man in Bosnia thinks he's being targeted by aliens. Why does he think this? Well, it's because his house has been hit six times by meteorites!

Radivoje Lajic lives in the village of Gornji Lajici in northern Bosnia. Since November 2007 he's suffered from half a dozen meteorite strikes. For some reason, the impacts always seem to happen when it's raining.

Of course, when anything inexplicable happens, it's natural to blame extraterrestrials. "I don't know what I have done to annoy them," he said, "but there is no other explanation that makes sense. The chance of being hit by a meteorite is so small that getting hit six times has to be deliberate."

Well, sorry, but probability theory means that sometimes things that have a small chance of happening do actually happen! It's not very likely that you would toss a coin and get 10 heads in a row, but it does happen - and if it happened to you, you wouldn't immediately blame aliens for having influenced the fall of the coin... would you?

Anyway, back to Mr Lajic. He's reinforced his roof with a steel girder, so future alien attacks won't endanger him or his family. He financed this by selling one of the alien projectiles to a Dutch university.

And it's not all bad news. Lajic admits that there's been some benefit to the meteorite bombardment. He explained, "These meteorites have brought happiness to our family as well, as we've met different people from around the world that were interested in it. And I have had so many visitors that I plan to make a small museum in my back garden."

Meanwhile, scientists are apparently studying the magnetic fields around the property to try to explain the frequency of the strikes. So clearly they don't blame the aliens!
