That's what I was taught as a child and you probably were two. Now, you can see pictures that prove it. The Electron Microscopy Unit of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center has been photographing snowflakes under an electron microscope in order to study their structure, and here's an amazing gallery of some of the images.
