ON THE WEB: SCIENTISTS LOVE THE MOVIES

by Hazed

Well, we now know the winner of the best picture Oscar is The King's Speech. That means it was the favorite picture of the year as voted for by the people that make up the Hollywood industry. (Royalty and disability - an unbeatable combination!)

But there are other lists of favorite films, too. Did you know that the film most favored by scientists is a spaghetti western? It's "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".

This fascinating factoid comes from a science blog by Reto Schneider. He has looked at the titles of scientific papers, and counted up how many of them use movie names (or variants of names). That Sergio Leone film comes out top, being used in such complex subjects as The Good, the Bad, and the Cell Type-Specific Roles of Hypoxia Inducible Factor-1 in Neurons and Astrocytes. Wow, sounds like a page turner.

Second most popular is "Sex Lies and Videotapes, and third is the Woody Allen film, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask)."

Head over to the blog for more.
