REAL LIFE NEWS: WORST HONEYMOON OF THE CENTURY

by Hazed

A newlywed couple from Sweden decided to go on a globe-trotting trip to celebrate their honeymoon, taking in a number of countries on different continents. But their trip exposed them to a whole catalogue of natural disasters.

Stefan and Erika Svanstrom and their baby daughter set off from Stockholm on 6 December and headed to Munich in Germany. There, they were stranded due to a blizzard.

Their next stop was the town of Cairns in Australia where they were immediately hit by one of the worst cyclones the country has ever experienced. They had to spend 24 hours on the concrete floor of a shopping mall along with another 2,500 refugees. Mr Svanstrom described the ordeal to a Stockholm newspaper: "We escaped by the skin of our teeth. Trees were being knocked over and big branches were scattered across the streets."

After that trauma they travelled to Brisbane, where they encountered extensive flooding. They had to retreat across country to Perth - where they narrowly escaped raging bush fires.

At this point they had had enough of Australia so moved to New Zealand, just in time to find the city had been laid waste by the earthquake on 22 February. "When we got there, the whole town was a war zone. We could not visit the city since it was completely blocked off, so instead we travelled around before going to Japan."

That's right, Japan. A few days after they arrived in Tokyo, the earth started shaking. "The trembling was horrible and we saw roof tiles fly off the buildings. It was like the buildings were swaying back and forth."

Their last stop was China, which proved to be the only peaceful place they visited - no fires, floods, earthquakes or any other natural disasters. Finally they returned to Stockholm on 29 March - presumably for a rest!
