THE PLANS FOR DISPLAY CABINETS

by Hazed

Alan has started to work on the code for display cabinets, which will allow POs a place to stash objects safely. He has planned out the basic details of how they will work, but bear in mind that he has a history of changing his mind about the nitty-gritty details when he actually writes the code, so don't take this as the absolute and final version.

With that caveat, here's what you need to know.

Each planet will have one display cabinet which will be automatically installed on the landing pad when the planet is linked into the game, at no charge. A basic cabinet has 24 slots for objects.

The size or weight of the objects isn't a factor - you could store 24 nano-crystals or 24 ten-ton Optherian Crystal Organs and the cabinet will reconfigure itself to accommodate them.

Given that a PO could end up with five planets in her system, that means there will be room for 120 objects. However, if that's not enough, then cabinets will be expandable. You can purchase an extra 12 slots for one slithy tove - and keep on adding more slots by spending more slithies; there will be no upper limit on the size of the cabinet.

Now for the bit you really need to know about. Because display cabinets give you a safe place to store your objects, you won't need to use your ship's locker so much, so when cabinets are put into the game the size of the locker is going to reduce drastically, to just 12 slots.

Now before you moan because your locker is currently stuffed to the gunnels with goodies, and where are you going to put all that stuff, don't panic. You won't lose anything out of your ship's locker - you just won't be able to put anything new in it until there are less than 12 items there.

But... the long-term plan is that ship's lockers are intended for temporary storage of stuff until you can get it back to your system to be put safely in a cabinet. Because when ship fighting is implemented, if your ship gets blown to smithereens, anything in the locker will be vaporized along with it - and insurance is not going to cover the replacement.

Further details of exactly how you will use your display cabinet, and how visitors to your planet will look at the items on display, will come later, when Alan actually gets to coding that bit!
