REAL LIFE NEWS: SEE, I TOLD YOU ALCOHOL WAS GOOD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

Health campaigners in the UK went way too far a few weeks ago when they released a paper saying that old people are drinking too much, and should cut their consumption of alcohol down to just one unit a day. This was met by derision from all ordinary people, as well as concern from some doctors that actually, alcohol can do more good than harm.

Now we have more proof that a bit of booze is a good thing. Psychologists in Seattle have confirmed that for many people, the benefits of drinking outweigh the downsides.

This study just looks at the perception people have about their own drinking habits, not any actual physical benefits or harm, but it shows why no amount of hand-wringing from health fanatics is ever going to stop people from drinking: they just like doing it.

The survey of 500 students at the University of Washington shows that overall, the positive consequences of heavy drinking, which include boosts to courage, chattiness and joke-telling abilities, improved sexual encounters and more energy to stay up late, outweighed the negative ones such as blackouts, fights, hangovers, missing classes or work.

This seems to have dismayed the psychologists behind the study, who are aghast that, "Until high levels of negative consequences are experienced, participants aren't deterred by the ill effects of drinking."

Which surely just confirms what most ordinary people already know: you put up with hangovers because booze makes you feel good.
