REAL LIFE NEWS: FACEBOOK MADE ME PREGNANT

by Hazed

Did you know that Facebook is guilty of increasing teenage pregnancies? No, neither did I, but the Thai government seems to think it is.

According to government body the National Economic and Social Development board, the fact that Thailand has the most teen pregnancies in Asia is all the fault of Facebook.

The reasoning (if you can call it that) goes like this:

  • Thai mothers under 20 years old accounted for 14% of all mothers who had babies in 2009 and 2010.
  • 18 to 24-year-olds are the largest group of Facebook users.
  • Facebook is full of seductive messages and video clips.
  • Therefore Facebook makes teenagers get pregnant.

Of course, this crazy statement has been refuted by local bloggers. One said that the high rate of teen mummies might be more to do with Thailand’s prudish approach to sex education. Saksith Saiyasombut revealed that a recent national sex ed exam had asked, “What should you do if you have a sexual urge?” To which the correct answer was apparently “Call your friends to go play football.”

Beats taking a cold shower, I suppose!
