FOLLOW-UP TO JOB OUTSOURCING ARTICLE
by Hazed
Last week I told you about the developer who outsourced his own job to a Chinese subcontractor so he could slack off. Displaying outrageous chutzpah, he then took jobs at several other companies and outsourced that work too, so he could pull in a whole bunch of salaries.
All of the news reports that I read about this guy ended up by saying that he was no longer employed by the company.
But after the Star was published, I got to thinking: why was his scheme such a bad one? After all, companies outsource programming to other countries that can do it cheaper, and that’s considered good business practice. What’s the difference when an individual employee does it?
One assumes that the work was being done to an acceptable standard, otherwise the guy would have got into trouble a lot sooner.
Possibly there are security issues in having the work done by Chinese subcontractors, but I am sure they could be overcome just as they are when it’s the company itself that does the outsourcing.
Surely, what’s source code for the goose is source code for the gander.
