REAL LIFE NEWS: TELESCOPIC VISION LENSES

Never mind Google Glasses, here’s the lens effect that I want. A combination of special contact lenses and spectacles can give the wearer telescopic vision.
The combination magnifies the details on scenes by 2.8 times. Wearers can switch between the normal and telescopic vision at will by using polarising filters.
The news report on the BBC website (see the source link below) goes on at great length about the fact that this has been developed for old people who are suffering from a vision problem called age-related macular degeneration. All very worthy, and I am sure they will benefit hugely from it, but come on... aren’t we all thinking how cool it would be to be able to magnify normal vision?
Clearly there are military applications to this new invention, because the research was funded by Darpa, the research arm of the US military. As one of the scientists says, “They are not so concerned about macular degeneration. They are concerned with super vision which is a much harder problem.”
If they crack it for military use then it should eventually trickle down into produces for consumers, too. It could make binoculars and opera glasses obsolete.
Now, how about x-ray vision?
