REAL LIFE NEWS: INDIAN PARROT HELPS SOLVE MURDER

by Hazed

A few months ago I told you about a pet parakeet who landed his owner in jail by announcing he was driving while drunk.

Now a parrot in India has helped to solve a crime by pointing police towards a murderer.

The parrot was owned by the murder victim Neelam Sharma, a 45-year-old woman from Agra, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. She was found dead by her husband, along with the pet dog which had also been killed. The bird, though, had been ignored by the murderer, which turned out to be significant.

When Mr Sharma’s nephew Ashutosh came to visit, the parrot became very upset. “The parrot that was unusually quiet suddenly started shrieking and flapping around the cage,” said Mr Sharma. “It was clearly distressed about something and only calmed down when Ashutosh left. Then when I spoke to other people, every time I mentioned Ashutosh’s name the parrot would start screeching. This made me really suspicious and I decided to call the police.”

The parrot’s tip-off caused police to check Ashutosh’s phone records which led to his arrest. Once in custody, he confessed that he had gone to the house with a friend to rob the place, and when his aunt surprised the pair they had killed her. They’d also offed the dog in case it could be used in an identity parade – but it hadn’t occurred to them that the parrot might recognise them.

That failure was their undoing, and it lead to the parrot being nicknamed Hercule Parrot by journalists reporting the case. Not that the Star would stoop so low as to use a dreadful pun like that…
