TERRIBLE REAL LIFE NEWS: CHOCOLATE NOT SO GOOD FOR YOU AFTER ALL

by Hazed

Resveratrol is a substance found in chocolate, red wine and berries, and it’s long been considered that it has healthy properties. But new research shows those claims are unfounded.

Scientists from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, US, have found that it has no significant impact on life-span, heart disease or cancer. The lead researcher Professor Richard Semba said: “The story of resveratrol turns out to be another case where you get a lot of hype about health benefits that doesn’t stand the test of time. The thinking was that certain foods are good for you because they contain resveratrol. We didn’t find that.”

This leaves unexplained the “French Paradox” where the people of France, who eat a diet high in cholesterol and saturated fat, have a lower incidence of heart disease than people from other nations. It had been thought their consumption of red wine was keeping them healthy, but now that has been disproved so scientists are wondering if other plant compounds which haven’t been identified yet might be associated with the French diet, and giving the health benefits.

So I no longer have an excuse for eating lots of chocolate – except of course that it’s yummy, and sometimes you don’t need any other reason.

(Comment from Alan when he read this story: Now you can drink and eat chocs without worrying that you might be succumbing to the wiles of the heath eating freaks.)
