Turmeric, a bright yellow spice used in curries, may help the brain to heal itself, according to a new report.
German scientists say in the journal Stem Cell Research and Therapy that a compound found in the spice could encourage the growth of nerve cells thought to be a part of the brain’s repair kit.
They carried out tests on rats, injecting them with the compound, aromatic-turmerone, then scanning their brains. The parts of the brain known to be involved in nerve cell growth were seen to be more active after the injections. This could be because the compound encourages a proliferation of brain cells. The higher the concentration of the compound, the great the cell growth.
If the results can be replicated in humans then the research may lead to future drugs for strokes and Alzheimer’s disease.
This is great news – not that I need an excuse to eat lots of curries…
