FED2 STAR FILM REVIEW: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

by Hazed

If you’re fed up with the Christmas stuff on the TV and can’t stand the sight of another Santa, elf or snow scene, then turn to a film that’s come out on DVD recently, which is one of my favourite films of the year: Guardians of the Galaxy.

It’s by Marvel Films and it’s part of their ever-expanding universe of interlinking films involving superheroes, based on their comic books. But don’t let that put you off! I’d never heard of these characters before and the movie stands alone even if you’ve never seen any of the other Marvel films.

So what is it about? Well, it’s a space opera, in the grand old meaning of the word. It’s about a group of people, of various races, who come together to travel the galaxy from planet to planet in order to… well, I don’t want to spoil the plot.

The main character is an immensely likeable adventuring rogue who calls himself Star Lord (although nobody else does) played by Chris Pratt. He’s joined by an unlikely crew which includes a talking racoon who is angry all the time (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and a walking tree (Vin Diesel) that only has one line of dialogue (which it says over and over again, to great effect).

The film’s got amazing breadth and scope as the characters rocket around the galaxy from planet to planet, but unlike the film I recommended last week, Interstellar, which was quite humourless, this one is a laugh a minute. It’s all done with a facetious look at space movies.

The main thing I love about the film is that it has a sense of fun – joy, even. It reminded me of the impact the original Star Wars film had when I first saw in many years ago. It’s set to a soundtrack of eighties disco hits (and yes, there is a good reason why) and Star Lord spends a lot of his time boogying across alien landscapes, which just adds to the enjoyment.

Go buy the DVD or Blu-ray and settle back to enjoy this blast of fun.
