REVIEW OF THE YEAR: SCIENCE BREAKTHROUGHS
by Hazed
In the last few weeks of 2014, the media gave up on publishing real news and instead told us what had happened throughout the year, with the usual rundowns of the best music, film, TV, tweet, viral video and so on. All mildly diverting, if only for the opportunity to yell, “I can’t believe you morons didn’t include…” whatever your own personal favourite was.
One rundown that wasn’t so trivial (or so subjective) is this list of scientific breakthroughs in 2014.
The list includes the Rosetta comet-chasing probe and its Philae lander, which achieved the amazing feat of landing on comet 67P. I covered this in the Star over the last few months, and it was incredibly exciting. Despite the hiccups in the landing itself, you have to call it a massive success.
