If you work for one of those companies that routinely expects employees to work long hours, then you could be putting your health at risk: new research suggests that people who work a 55 hour week have an increased risk of stroke.
The largest study ever carried out on long working hours covered three continents. It was conducted by scientists from University College London. They found that those who work more than 55 hours a week have a 33% increased risk of stroke compared with those who work a more normal 35-40 hour week. They also increase their risk of coronary heart disease by 13%.
So the long hours culture, which sees people working onto the evenings and at weekends as well, isn’t just making you miserable – it’s killing you!
