REAL LIFE NEWS: MARS ORBITER SNAPS CO2 AVALANCHE

by Hazed

From Martian movies, to real life news of Mars. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has used its HiRise camera to capture a picture showing a “dry ice avalanche” streaming down a cliff face.

The avalanche was spotted on a scarp at the edge of the North Polar layered deposits. It’s about 65 feet across – nearly half the length of a football field.

Follow the source link below to see the pictures.

The avalanche consists of carbon dioxide frost (dry ice), which forms in a thin layer on the planet’s surface and then thickens and thins as the seasons change. As the North Polar region warms up, it results in thermal expansion which loosens the CO2 frost, and that triggers avalanches like the one seen in these images.
