PICTURE OF THE WEEK: CRACKED NORTH POLE OF JUPITER’S MOON
by Hazed
A few days ago, the Cassini spacecraft swooped down low over Enceladus, one of Jupiter’s moons. It flew through one of the water jets that plume up from the surface, in an attempt to sample the liquid to find out what it is made up of. As I write this, it will be a few more days before we get any data, but meanwhile, here’s a picture it took on its last flyby of the moon a few weeks ago.
It shows Enceladus’ northern region, which we already knew is full of craters. Now the detail of this image shows strange cracks and fractures in the surface.
