PICTURES OF THE WEEK: VENUS ON FIRE

When I started reading science fiction, something like forty years ago, the first books I read were not exactly scientifically accurate. They had people living in the jungles of Venus – which was habitable, albeit hotter and wetter than Earth.
Now, of course, we know that Venus is not in the least bit hospitable to humans. In fact, it’s a fiery hellhole.
As if we needed any further proof of that, the European Space Agency has released a set of images of the planet’s south pole, taken by the Venus Express spacecraft. Take a look at them here.
