REAL LIFE NEWS: OH NO, SLEEPING LATE IS BAD FOR YOU!

by Hazed

I am sure I’ve written about the dangers of over-sleeping before, but a new study has just been published that reinforces the fact that staying in bed late at weekends really is bad for you.

Oh dear.

A study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism linked sleeping more at weekends with an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.

The researchers describe the phenomenon of shifting our sleep patterns based on whether we have to get up and go to work as “social jet lag” and say that a shift of a few hours has the same effect as crossing a time zone. This throws out our circadian rhythms and makes us feel sleepy during the day.

As if that weren’t enough, it increases levels of triglycerides and decreasing levels of “good” cholesterol. What’s more, those who shift their sleep patterns are more likely to gain weight.

Night owls like me were more at risk of these changes when they time shift.

Before I start to panic, the study doesn’t actually show that anybody developed diabetes or had a heart attack just because they had a lie-in. It does show there’s some changes to some blood results, but whether the changes are enough to make a definite statement about cause and effect are not at all clear.

It’s probably better to make sure you are getting enough sleep overall, so if that means catching up a bit at weekends, I will carry on doing it.
