PRANK OF THE WEEK: DON’T BUILD A TIME MACHINE!

by Hazed

Riders on the New York subway recently tried to ignore a man soliciting money – that’s nothing new. But he had a novel pitch: he wanted funds to build a time machine.

But then the inventor’s future self showed up, and implored the passengers not to give any because time travel would have terrible consequences.

Undeterred a few of the passengers handed over their money – and then their future selves arrived telling them not to do it!

Sounds like science fiction come to life. But it was an elaborately staged prank by the troupe Improv Everywhere, using several sets of identical twins to spoof the passengers. They ran the scene five times on the train, and filmed it.

You can watch a video of this stunt here.

Improv Everywhere have been staging stunts for years and many of them are highly inventive. At Christmas, they set up a giant switch in a New York square; when random passers by flipped it, the whole square lit up. They have also had people bumping into each other on crosswalks and spontaneously breaking into a ballroom dance, customers in a fast food restaurant in a mall staging an unexpected musical, a portpotty that seems to be bigger on the inside than the outside, and their now famous “no pants day” when people ride the subway without their pants. You can watch videos of all their stunts on the Improv Everywhere website.
