REAL LIFE NEWS: DELIVERING BEER BY UNDERGROUND PIPELINE

A Belgian town now has a pipeline running underneath its streets – to deliver beer!
Bruges is a small, medieval walled town in Belgium. I’ve been there several times and it’s a lovely place to visit; very picturesque with great restaurants – plus beer and chocolate, so what’s not to like?
One of the breweries, De Halve Maan (which means The Half Moon) has spent 4 million euros to build a 3.2km pipeline to carry beer from its brewery in the centre of the town to its bottling plant on the outskirts. The pipeline solves the problems that beer tankers had negotiating the narrow winding streets of the city.
The head of the brewery, Xavier Vanneste, came up with the idea of the beer pipeline after seeing workers laying cables in front of his house. “It all started as a joke,” he says. “Nobody believed it was going to work.”
He used crowdfunding to raise a large part of the cost, offering those who supported him bottles of beer. Anyone who invested 7,500 euros will get a bottle of beer every day for the rest of their lives. One person who took up this offer reckons he will have paid off his investment in 15 years. Bargain!
