REAL LIFE NEWS: MAN SUES BOSS BECAUSE HIS JOB WAS SOOOOO BORING

by Hazed

A Frenchman is taking his former employer to a tribunal because he was given too little work to do. Frédéric Desnard says his managerial job at a perfume factory was so tedious he became literally bored out of his mind.

He described the experience of being so under-worked as suffering from a ‘descent into hell’, saying it was similar to burnout, but less interesting.

Desnard’s complaint is that between 2010 and 2014 he was given little or no work, or made to do menial tasks – described in French as mise en placard, or put in the cupboard.

He alleges this treatment left him “destroyed” and with “serious depression”, and claims that his lack of stimulation at work triggered an epileptic fit when he was driving.

He is claiming €360,000 (£282,000 or $413,000) in compensation and damages. However, the company, Interparfums, reject the claim, saying Desnard had never said anything about being bored while at the company.

Last December, the company took Desnard to court for defamation, and a judge ordered him to pay Interparfums, stating he was “inspired by a sense of personal animosity” against his former employer who he had become convinced, without any real proof, had “ruined his health”.

Most of us probably feel we are extremely over-worked so would welcome being left to goof off, but I was once in the position of being employed to do nothing when I worked for a division that was being wound down, and it was soul-destroying. But I have to wonder why Desnard didn’t just leave if it was so very bad!
