DUMB CRIMINAL OF THE WEEK: TRACKED BY STOLEN TRACKERS

by Hazed

A thief (who has not been named because that would endanger other investigations) made things very easy for detectives when he broke into a tech company and made off with a box of gadgets.

First, he left plenty of DNA evidence behind him. He drank a bottle of beer from the office refrigerator and left the bottle behind. Then he cut himself and used a napkin to soak up the blood, and left that behind too.

But what lead the police right to him were the items he stole. He thought the box contained phone chargers, but actually they were cutting-edge tracking devices that are intended for companies that need to know exactly where their products are.

The vice president of products at Roambee, the company that makes the trackers, explained: “There’s no switch. It’s always on and it always tells you, as long as it’s got a battery, where it is in the world.”

Police were able to pinpoint two clusters of trackers, one in a storage unit and another in a moving vehicle. By the end of the day police had arrested the suspect and recovered the stolen trackers, which were worth around $30,000, as well as other stolen property.

Score one for technology.
