I HAVE BECOMES A VICTIM OF CRIME
by Hazed
Regular readers will know that by the time April was done I had suffered two disasters this year. First, in February was the health problem which saw me spend three boring days in hospital followed by a long convalescence. Then a month ago my computer died and I had to buy a new one and then go through the tedium of setting it up properly, reinstalling software restoring data and so on.
After that I joked that since bad things usually come in threes, I fully expected to be hit by a meteorite.
Well, last weekend, the meteorite did indeed hit me, in the form of a burglary. Thieves broke into my house on Friday night while I was asleep and stole my stuff. They made off with my iPhone and iPad, most of my credit cards, my driver’s licence and passport, a lot of cash, and an expensive bag (which I had only bought the day before).
They found my emergency stash of cash which I kept hidden for just such eventualities – but luckily they missed the emergency backup credit card, so I have been able to pay for stuff.
And so I found myself, on an unusually hot and sunny bank holiday weekend, stuck inside dealing with the consequences – including what felt like centuries on the phone to various hellish call centres.
I tell myself that it’s only stuff, nobody died, it’s all replaceable – but anyone who has suffered a burglary will know that it leaves you feeling violated and vulnerable. I am feeling shaken by the incident.
I just hope that now the three disasters have happened, I can have a peaceful time for the rest of the year.
