BARB'S 1998 RECOMMENDATIONS

We Interrupt This Broadcast: Relive the Events That Stopped Our Lives... from the Hindenburg to the Death of Princess Diana (book and double CD)
by Joe Garner

A strange view of the past as You are there - at the critical moments of the 20th Century when everything stopped and the world listened. The book and CD set is a fascinating duo. The book has brief explanations and photos of each of the 39 broadcasts while the CDs provide recordings of the actual broadcasts. Eerie and unique.

The Polar Express: Gift Set (audio cassette and book)
by Chris Van Allsburg, William Hurt (reads on the cassette)

A story of wonder and quiet beauty that makes perfect reading at Christmas. A young boy lying awake in bed on Christmas Eve is swept up by Santa and taken with other children on a mysterious trip to the North Pole. The illustrations are stunning.

The Twenty-One Balloons
by Willian Pene Dubois

This book is for children aged 9 to 12. It's a delightful Victorian tale of adventure as a retired teacher recounts the mysterious events of his balloon adventure. Fantasy and Victorian inventiveness, lost diamond mines, the volcanic island of Krakateo make for an eccentric and thoroughly enjoyable story.

The book won the Newbury Award of 1948.

It's available in paperback but it's worth getting the hardback because of the wonderful illustrations.

The Phantom Tolbooth (video)
Book by Norton Juster

Milo is bored, bored, BORED! (Where have we heard that complaint before?) Share this ingenious fantasy as Milo drives through a mysterious tollbooth in his red car into a strange world of puns and adventure and wit, where letters and numbers are at war. This wonderful flick is an unusual animated version of the book and a bit more sophisticated than most children's films. Enough of that, this story is smart and funny and a really great time! You won't mind watching it the 6000 times the kids will insist on. (Don't let on how much you enjoy it and don't let them see you sneak off to watch it yourself.) It's THAT good!
